is currently accepting job applications for Deputy Sheriff Cadet. This job classification is utilized only for Sheriff personnel participating in the Department’s law enforcement training academy. Deputy Sheriff Cadets must successfully complete an intensive 25-week law enforcement academy. Upon graduation, Deputy Sheriff Cadets will be promoted to Deputy Sheriff.
The law enforcement training academy includes classroom study and examinations in Communications, Criminal Investigations, Custody Procedures, Force and Weaponry, Law, Laws of Evidence, Patrol Procedures, Progressive Physical Training and Defensive Tactics, Police Community Relations, Professional Orientation, Traffic and Vehicle Operations, and related subjects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION
(a) Minimum age is 20.5 years of age at the time of application; minimum age 21 at the time of appointment. There is no maximum age limit.
(b) Possession of a U.S. high school diploma or GED certificate.
(c) Applicants must have no felony convictions and must not be on probation; misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on number, type and recency.
(d) Valid pictured I.D. such as military, driver’s license, state, or other photo identification issued by a regulatory agency.
(e) Must be a U.S. Citizen or resident alien in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.

REQUIREMENTS AT THE TIME OF THE SELECTION INTERVIEW AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION PROCESSES
(a) Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
(b) Vision: 20/100 uncorrected; correctable to at least 20/30; or soft contact lenses correctable to 20/30 (subject to State of California P.O.S.T. requirements).
APPLICATION PROCESS
STEP 1: Complete the on-line application form and provide correct and complete responses to the Supplemental Questions.
STEP 2: If you meet the minimum qualifications for Deputy Sheriff Cadet, you will receive an electronic e-mail or letter notification inviting you to use the self scheduling feature to schedule your written exam. Use the self scheduling feature to select a date and time for the written examination.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION
The written examination consists of the California Peace Officers Standards Training (POST) Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery. This is an English comprehension written examination consisting of questions pertaining to vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension. There is a 2-½ hour time limit to complete this examination.
NOTE: If you have recently taken the California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery with any agency, then you must wait at least thirty (30) days before you can take this test with the County of San Diego Sheriff’s Department. If applicants fail to wait at least 30 days from their last examination date and proceed with taking two tests in a 30 day window period, then California POST will invalidate the second test score administration. If the applicant’s score is invalidated, then they will not be placed on the eligible list for Deputy Sheriff Cadet with the County of San Diego.

Applicants must successfully pass the written examination in order to be placed on the eligibility list for one year.
BACKGROUND ORIENTATION AND INVESTIGATION PROCESS
Qualified applicants will be invited to a pre-screening meeting administered by law enforcement staff of the Sheriff’s Department. This pre-screen meeting will provide applicants with an overview of the overall selection process and a description of the training academy.
If successful in the pre-screen process, candidates will be required to complete the following: a comprehensive Background Investigation, a Computer Voice Stress Analysis Exam, an Employment Interview with Sheriff’s sworn management, a Psychological Examination, and a complete Medical Examination.
